2-way solenoid valves

A 2-way solenoid valve has one inlet and one outlet port. They are normally used to allow and shut off the flow of fluids. There exist normally open and normally closed 2-way valves, this means that the flow is either open or closed, when no electrical energy has activated the solenoid soil. The 2-way valves have a huge variety of applications like sprinkler systems, irrigation and industrial use. In 2-way solenoid valves the pressure of the inlet port is very important because this forces the air or fluid through the valve. Also it is important that the output port has a lower pressure, otherwhise the flow would be blocked or reverse.

Water solenoid valves

Water solenoid valves are designed to control the flow of water at normal or high temperatures up to steam. They are available in different sizes and designs. They can be used in household based machines like washing machines, coffee machines or dishwashers. In the industry the range of usage is huge, from mixing fluids in the chemical industry to control the flow of hot steam. There exist two types of valves, direct acting and differential operated valves. The first one are purely activated by the elecrical energy in the valve, they do not rely on the fluid pressure on the input port. The second type does rely on the fluid pressure. Depending on the default state there are normally closed and normally open valves, this means the flow state when the solenoid valve is not energized.

Asco solenoid valves

Asco ist the worlds largest solenoid valve producer. Asco produces valves to controll the flow of gas, air, oil, water and steam. Asco valves are highly innovative, they offer the whole range from two way solenoid valves up to complex flow control solutions. The latest addition to the product line are miniature valves, pneumatic controls, new sensors and position technology which can communicate over the network.

Asco valve is a part of Emerson Electric Company. They started in 1888 to manufacture compressor, elevator and generator controls. In 1910 they were the first to develope and product new electrical control devicesm, known today as solenoid valves. 1950 Asco began to expand internationally, today Asco is present in over 42 contries worldwide.   1985 Asco was acquired by Emerson Electric Co., which is one of the Fortune 100 companies.

What is a solenoid valve?

Solenoid valves are electromechanical valves for use with gas or liquid. The valve operates through a solenoid coil, which is controlled by an electric current. Solenoid valves can have two or more than two ports. In a two way valve the flow is switched off and on, in a three way valve the flow is switched between the two different output ports. It is possible to combine multiple valves together to build a more complex system.

The solenoid valves are the most used control elements for fluids. They can be used to release, shut off, distribute, dose or mix fluids. They offer fast and safe switching, very high reliability and low control power combined in a compact design.

A solenoid valve is made of two parts, the solenoid and the valve. The solenoid is used to produce mechanical energy by using electrical energy. In closed state a elastic diaphragm is pushed against the input and output port by a weak spring. Both ports are heading upwards from the lower part of the valve. Above the diaphragm there is a cavity which is filled by the fluid through a tiny hole in the diaphragm, this way both sides are exposed to the same pressure. The solenoid controls a small conduit which connects the cavity with the output port. In closed state, this conduit is closed. If the solenoid changes it state, the fluid from the cavity flows out to the output port, the pressure decreases on that side and the diaphragm is pushed upwards. Now the main valve is opened and the fluid can flow through. The solenoid valve relies on the difference in pressure between input and output port. If the output pressure is greater then the input pressure, the valve would be open all the time.

There are different type of solenoid valves, valves with one or two solenoids, valves powered by direct current or alternating current and valves with a different amount of outputs.
